Interview with Alan Lee
BWI Group Assistant President and CTO
Alan Lee has been in the automotive supply business for 30 years, after graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in Ohio. In his work as an engineer, he has been involved in product development and in the management of the ABS, traction control and stability control systems product line. The knowledge that he has gained over the decades is now being put to use with the entire BWI Group, working on exciting suspension and braking product lines for future-ready technologies.

What is considered irrevocable in the automotive industry?
Alan Lee:
1. People like to move from point A to B in their own way, and for many they want to do this with performance and style.
2. Technology improves – performance, safety, and infotainment.
3. There is and hopefully will be a broad selection of choices out there for a variety of needs.
What’s the most exciting thing about your job?
Alan Lee: The most enjoyable part is Innovating and bringing something new to market. This can be a new product or an improvement that progresses the technology, safety, or performance in a new way.

What positive difference does your company make?
Alan Lee: BWI Group is not a big company, but we can make a big impact. Our size allows us to bring new products to market such as the latest two box brake system collaboration on iDBC² or our new air suspension and lift products where we combine the best BWI mechatronic know-how of brakes and suspensions.
What does inspire you?
Alan Lee: Innovation that makes a difference for the end customer, solving difficult problems, and finding new solutions. Chassis systems have evolved a long way from leaf springs and manual brakes. It’s all about making the drive and ride better in all situations.

What is your legacy?
Alan Lee: Legacy is for others to judge, but I hope our legacy shows that we made a positive contribution. From our early days as Delco at GM where we helped standardize ABS with ABSVI to our latest brake by wire and roll control projects, it is all about delivering and sustaining value for our customers and their end customers. It’s all our teams together with our suppliers working hard every day to make this happen.
What benefits or added value can your customers expect from the cooperation?
Alan Lee: Our goal is to help our customers achieve the full potential of their vision for their projects. The development process can have its highs and lows, but in the end we still strive to deliver on this full potential, and we work to do this in a flexible and professional manner. Because we, together with the OEM, are on the same team, working toward the same goals.
